SaaS Rule of 40 Calculator

Calculate the Rule of 40 for SaaS by adding a comparable year-over-year growth rate to an EBITDA, free-cash-flow or other consistently defined operating margin.

Growth Rate, Profitability Margin and Target Score

Use a consistent growth metric and profitability definition. A common implementation combines year-over-year ARR or revenue growth with LTM EBITDA or free-cash-flow margin. Use the same growth and margin definitions whenever you compare periods or companies.

Year-over-year ARR or revenue growth used as the growth contribution. Keep the same growth basis across comparisons.
EBITDA, free-cash-flow or another clearly documented operating margin for the same measurement period. Keep the margin basis consistent.
Comparison target, commonly 40 for the traditional Rule of 40 threshold.

Scenario Summary-

Example: Rule of 40 Score = 43

YoY growth: 35%

Profitability margin: 8%

Rule of 40 score: 43

Target score: 40

Gap vs target: +3 points

The sample inputs shown here match the default calculator values so the example can be reproduced directly.

Formula

Rule of 40 Score = YoY Growth Rate + Profitability / FCF MarginGap vs Target = Rule of 40 Score - Target Score

How to Interpret the Result

The Rule of 40 is a growth-versus-profitability balancing framework, not a standalone valuation rule. A score of 43 can come from 35% growth plus 8% margin or from a very different mix, so compare the underlying components as well as the total and keep definitions stable across periods.

Use the result as an operating diagnostic rather than a standalone verdict. SaaS metrics become more useful when they are compared with adjacent measures such as recurring revenue growth, retention, acquisition efficiency, gross margin and cash efficiency. A strong value in one metric can still hide weakness elsewhere.

How to Use This SaaS Metric in Planning

SaaS Rule of 40 is designed for a specific SaaS operating decision within growth & capital efficiency. The calculator keeps the input scope explicit so teams can reproduce the result from finance, billing, CRM or subscription analytics data without mixing unrelated periods or customer cohorts.

The core calculation follows this methodology: Rule of 40 Score = year-over-year growth rate + the selected profitability or free-cash-flow margin; Gap vs Target = Rule of 40 Score - Target Score. The score adds percentage-point contributions rather than multiplying them. Keep units aligned before entering values. Revenue and cost inputs should cover the same reporting scope, while percentages should use the same cohort and period definition throughout the calculation.

For planning, save the current result and test a second scenario with one assumption changed at a time. This makes it easier to distinguish the effect of pricing, customer retention, acquisition cost, contract mix or revenue growth instead of changing several assumptions simultaneously.

Data definitions matter. Document whether values are based on invoices, recognized revenue, contracted recurring revenue, active customers, paying accounts or cash movement. Consistent definitions make trend analysis more reliable and reduce false changes caused by reporting methodology rather than business performance.

This calculator is an educational planning tool. It does not replace accounting, valuation, investment, tax or legal advice. For board reporting, fundraising, acquisitions or audited financial statements, reconcile the inputs to the company source systems and apply the organization reporting policy consistently.

SaaS Rule of 40 Calculator Frequently Asked Questions

Add the selected growth rate percentage to the selected profitability or cash-flow margin percentage.
Yes. A negative margin reduces the Rule of 40 score and reflects the growth-profitability trade-off.
ARR or recurring-revenue growth is common in SaaS, while some public-company analyses use revenue growth. Use a year-over-year basis and document the growth definition.
It clears the traditional 40-point threshold, but the mix of growth and margin, company stage, retention, capital efficiency and the exact definitions still matter.
Not reliably. Make the margin basis comparable, such as both using EBITDA margin or both using free-cash-flow margin.
